Dell Precision M6500 (nVidia Quadro FX 2800M) screen turns off (solved)

UPDATE: 4/27/2017

If you install the Windows 10 Creators update you will need to reapply the powermizer registry settings.

I recently started using a Dell Precision M6500 with Windows 10 at work. It’s equipped with an Intel i7 CPU x940 @ 2.13Ghz and 8GBs of Ram. It’s a pretty decent machine, I can run 2 or 3 Windows Server 2k12 R2 virtual machines concurrently in Hyper-V with no problem.

All was well for about an hour until the screen mysteriously turned off. I forced shutdown and rebooted because that’s what you do to fix most every Windows related problem. Once I was booted back in all was well for another hour or so and the same thing happened. At this point I’m getting annoyed, this cannot be a coincidence.

After a quick Google search, I realized this has been a problem for many hardware platforms running various flavors of Windows. From what I could gather the problem was with a certain family of nVidia video cards, in my case the Quadro FX 2800M. Apparently the card would sense an instability in the voltage from the power supply and turn off. Incidentally, I ran a test running the machine off the battery only and never had the screen turn off.

A little more Google searching yielded a potential solution, nVidia Power Mizer Manager v1.01. This is a small executable program that simply creates and sets some registry values that essentially prevents the graphics card from turning off due to faulty power readings. The problem with this solution is, in every forum post I could find, the download links for this program always lead to the same, now defunct, website. It took me hours to finally find the little exe, I tried it and 2 days later I have not had the screen turn off… Problem solved, I think.

The image below shows the settings I used that have worked so far.

I have saved this little program to Google Drive and shared it so everyone will now have access.

I’ll come back and let everyone know if this solves my problem (exactly same as mentioned above).
